This film isn’t just about the great performances; it’s not just the brilliant camera work - the use of light and shadow, angles, perspective, leading lines, every scene being framed perfectly; it’s not only the quirky characters; nor the twists and turns of the plot; it’s not the setting itself which immerses you in a tense and complicated post-war Vienna; it isn’t even the jaunty musical score that is somehow jarring set against the absurdity of the situation
