The Odyssey
I’m someone who generally finds something to enjoy in most films. I’m not contrarian or anything. Christopher Nolan’s films just don’t work for me and this is no exception. I left the cinema after an hour and a half of not enjoying a single moment! That’s quite impressive!
It’s difficult for me to understand what it is about his films I dislike so much. I’ve often put it down to the score being at odds with what you’re being shown on screen; that’s certainly one thing. Like the music does the tension building regardless of what’s happening, and it’s actually tiring.
The film turns lots of disparate scenes into a woven narrative by turning all these scenes into a mélange where the music binds it all together without it actually being coherent. The music gives you the illusion of it being coherent. I know some people love this shit and consider it masterful pacing, but I hate it.
So I think I have the same reasons for disliking Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. I’m not saying all the people who love Nolan’s work are wrong or anything, but I actually just hate everything he does!
