You won’t find any cartoonishly sadistic Nazi commandants here, nor the usual comforting clichés. The uniforms are French police and military; the officials are French bureaucrats; and it is the French public, passively complicit, who allow events to unfold as long as they are not personally affected. That pervasive normality is what makes the film so unsettling, and why it has stayed with me ever since I first saw it.
